Barton_on_mapBarton Elementary offers classes in visual art, dance, and general music instruction, as well as band and orchestra for students in grades 3-6. Since becoming a Turnaround Arts: California partner school in 2014, Barton Elementary has created a new mural, produced a winter program for the school community that featured performances by every grade level, taken field trips to the Victoria Gardens Playhouse, Cal State San Bernardino’s Native American art collection, and the Costa Mesa Playhouse, integrated poetry and spoken word into the language arts curriculum through a partnership with Get Lit, held a family arts night led by P.S. ARTS, and produced their first ever school musical, Disney’s 101 Dalmatians Kids. The school has also strategically initiated professional development targeted at improving student behavior and academic performance through arts-based strategies. As part of the Turnaround Arts: California Regional Coach Program, the school receives ongoing, in-person coaching in arts integration strategies and strategic arts planning from P.S. ARTS. Turnaround Artist Whoopi Goldberg has adopted Barton Elementary.
