Burbank_SD_on_mapBurbank Elementary has transformed into an arts-rich environment since becoming a Turnaround Arts: California partner school. The school offers instruction in theater, dance, music, and visual art, as well as an after-school show choir. Burbank has developed arts partnerships with Guitars in the Classroom, Mingei International Museum, Young Audiences, Once Upon a Tiempo, Children’s Museum, Timken Museum, and the San Diego Junior Theatre. Students have had several opportunities to perform, including a standing room only winter program for families and community members. Students have exhibited their artwork at the San Diego Unified School District offices and at the Mingei International Museum. As part of the Turnaround Arts: California Regional Coach Program, the school receives ongoing, in-person coaching in arts integration strategies and strategic arts planning from Collaborations: Teachers and Artists (CoTA). As the school’s Turnaround Artist, Jason Mraz has worked with students to spruce up the campus garden, plant an orchard, coach performers, share music with students, and encourage arts integrated core content area learning.
