Student musicians perform during Turnaround Artist Tim Robbins' visit to Burbank Elementary School in Hayward.
Hayward Unified School District
Burbank Elementary is home to the area’s oldest Dual Language Immersion program, providing the opportunity for biliteracy since 1999. Since partnering with Turnaround Arts: California in 2014, Burbank added a visual arts program and arts integration focused professional development, in addition to music classes and choir. An Adobe grant through the White House ConnectED Initiative provided software and professional development tools designed to bring creative, 21st century skills into the classroom. Students have taken cultural field trips to the San Francisco Symphony and the Asian Art Museum. Turnaround Artist Tim Robbins has worked on arts integrated lessons with students, donated art supplies and equipment, coached the cast of the school’s musical, Annie Jr., and exchanged multiple video messages with the school community. Once one of the lowest performing schools in the Hayward Unified School District, Burbank now boasts a waiting list for interested families.
