Fremont_on_mapSince becoming a Turnaround Arts: California partner school in 2014, Fremont/Lopez Elementary has offered visual arts, music, dance, and drama classes to all students and started a mariachi band that was concert-ready within three months. The school has also made a strong effort to reach out to parents by holding an Arts Showcase, Family Arts Nights, and Parent Coffee Hours, which include student performances. In addition, students have produced a Winter Showcase as well as a school musical, Annie Jr. The school has established arts partnerships with P.S. ARTS, the National League of American Pen Women, Ballet Folklorico de Frank Zapata, and Little Manila Dance Collective. In February 2016, the school’s mariachi band was invited to Washington, D.C., to participate in an interactive student workshop — The Musical Legacy of Ray Charles — hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama! As part of the Turnaround Arts: California Regional Coach Program, the school receives ongoing, in-person coaching in arts integration strategies and strategic arts planning from Liz Harvey. With the mentorship of Turnaround Artists Russell Simmons and Smokey Robinson, Fremont/Lopez is one of sixteen Turnaround Arts: California partner schools throughout the state.
