Joyner Elementary faculty members promote high expectations through the rigorous implementation of Common Core standards in a loving environment that reinforces positive student behavior. Located in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA, Joyner Elementary is currently the lowest performing school in the Los Angeles Unified School District and has spent recent years stabilizing its staff, winning the trust of parents and communities, and providing rigorously authentic learning experiences. The school partners with the UCLA Teacher Education Program and the School of Education at CSU Dominguez Hills to recruit and retain highly qualified and talented teachers; Joyner Elementary is also part of the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools network. Roy Choi, “Godfather of the Food Truck,” recently opened a restaurant across the street from Joyner Elementary and partners with the school on its Community Kitchen Garden Grant. With limited resources, the school has established an art studio, a Reggio-inspired creative play space, and a STEAM lab — many teachers volunteer to work with students in these spaces after school. Los Angeles Unified School District also provides a Drama teacher (in grades K-1) and a Music teacher (in grades 2-5), each for one day a week. As part of the Turnaround Arts: California Regional Coach Program, the school receives ongoing, in-person coaching in arts integration strategies and strategic arts planning from P.S. ARTS. With the mentorship of Turnaround Artist Cameron Diaz, Joyner Elementary is one of six Turnaround Arts: California partner schools to join the Turnaround Arts program in the 2016/17 academic year.
