Monterey Peninsula Unified School District
Located in Seaside, CA, King Elementary is a vibrant learning environment in a district with a strong commitment to arts education. In recent years, the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District has more than doubled its music offerings, initiated an art and science “Eco Ambassador” program in the fifth grade, and hired a Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator to connect teaching artists and nonprofit arts organizations to its schools. King Elementary has also initiated arts-based traditions in recent years, presenting an annual talent show and staging Seussical the Musical. In 2015, King Elementary introduced music classes to all of its students and local teaching artists provided an additional 60 hours of arts instruction for the entire school. King Elementary has also partnered with The Arts Council of Monterey County, The San Jose Opera, the Carmel Music Society, and the Monterey Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival. As part of the Turnaround Arts: California Regional Coach Program, the school receives ongoing, in-person coaching in arts integration strategies and strategic arts planning from Sunset Center. With the mentorship of Turnaround Artist Jackson Browne, King Elementary is one of six Turnaround Arts: California partner schools to join the Turnaround Arts program in the 2016/17 academic year.
