Santa Ana Unified School District
Sierra Prep faculty members are dedicated to creating an environment in which the visual and performing arts thrive in all areas — not just in electives. As students make connections between the classroom and their own lives, they craft a vision of who they are and what they hope to become. Sierra Prep, known for its visual and performing arts emphasis, offers electives in music (band, orchestra, marching band, and jazz band), visual arts, woodshop, and speech and debate. The school is in the process of implementing STEM programs that include computer science and engineering electives. Students attend eight periods on a rotating block schedule and have several extended school day opportunities, including a dance ensemble, art club, guitar-making club, media club, and quarterly sports. All students have access to iPads, and many classrooms utilize Google Classroom, interactive whiteboards, and voice-enhancing sound systems. As part of the Turnaround Arts: California Regional Coach Program, the school receives ongoing, in-person coaching in arts integration strategies and strategic arts planning from the Orange County Department of Education. With the mentorship of Turnaround Artist Herbie Hancock, Sierra Prep is one of six Turnaround Arts: California partner schools to join the Turnaround Arts program in the 2016/17 academic year.
