Whaley Middle faculty members strive to provide academic excellence, promote positive character development, and develop college readiness in all students. Celebrating over 50 years of service to the community of East Rancho Dominguez, Whaley Middle provides students in grades six through eight with a comprehensive curriculum that follows the “school within a school” model. Each grade level is divided into two “families” and organizes their own academic and social events. In addition to observing different cultural celebrations throughout the year, teachers and staff work together to make the curriculum culturally relevant to students through research and school-based projects. In partnership with City Hearts, Whaley offers after-school arts courses in guitar, dance, photography, and Shakespeare. As part of the Turnaround Arts: California Regional Coach Program, the school receives ongoing, in-person coaching in arts integration strategies and strategic arts planning from P.S. ARTS. With the mentorship of Turnaround Artist Russell Simmons, Whaley Middle is one of six Turnaround Arts: California partner schools to join the Turnaround Arts program in the 2016/17 academic year.
