Santa Ana Unified School District
As a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) school, Willard Intermediate faculty members work hard to provide a rigorous, standards-based instructional program using best practices in teaching. Currently, the school offers visual arts, digital arts, and vocal and instrumental music courses during the school day, as well as an after-school dance program. Willard Intermediate feeds into the District’s conservatory high school and is eager to position itself as an arts-rich, pre-conservatory. The Santa Ana Unified School District has partnered with Orange County’s Arts Advantage Initiative to provide professional development, materials, and other arts resources to its schools. As part of the Turnaround Arts: California Regional Coach Program, the school receives ongoing, in-person coaching in arts integration strategies and strategic arts planning from the Orange County Department of Education. With the mentorship of Turnaround Artist Nigel Lythgoe, Willard Intermediate is one of six Turnaround Arts: California partner schools to join the Turnaround Arts program in the 2016/17 academic year.
