Michael Hulsizer
Michael Hulsizer taught my senior class civics, an important subject growing up on a USAF base. And he taught civics like it mattered, although it took decades for us to see just how much. We understood the components of our healthy, functioning democracy, knew the difference between patriotism and nationalism and so much more. I’ve cast my vote in every major election since turning 18 and I thank him for my sense of gratitude for — and my responsibility to — our democracy. My pride in being American holds a great deal of what he taught us. And when I think of the ripple effect of his teaching on generations of Americans and the roles his students have played in our civil society, I’m awed. Thank you, Mr. Hulsizer!
