Turnaround Arts: California works with 27 partner schools throughout the state, which were selected through a competitive application process. All schools are “priority-designated” as defined by the U.S. Department of Education and were identified as eligible for program participation by the California Department of Education.

In partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, we infuse schools with creative resources such as arts supplies, musical instruments, and licensing rights to perform school musicals. We mentor principals to lead for change through the arts, and we ensure that teachers are trained to integrate the arts into other subjects, like reading and math. We provide funding for schools to partner with local arts organizations and bring teaching artists into the classroom. From an annual national conference, to ongoing coaching and convenings of teachers and school leaders — we connect school teams to arts education experts as well as a network of peer schools. We partner with schools to build a strategic, arts-based approach to addressing broader school challenges. Eight pillars guide arts-fueled transformation at each school.
